Character
[/u][/center]Name: Marquis Laurence of Rosemark
Gender: Male
Age: 34
City: Corus
Status: Marquis (Is noble his actual status?)
Personality
Laurence is mostly unhappy with his life. He doesn't like being the heir of a fief, he doesn't like being ugly. One of his favourite pastimes is fantasising about how his life could be, if only... He can sit for hours and hours writing the stories in his endless black moleskin notebooks, especially at times when he's feeling melancholy.
One of the few things in his life that Laurence is really happy about is his wife. She was found to be the most practical woman for him to marry, and since then he has found that she also is the most practical woman for him to live with and to love. He would do anything for her, what so ever, but he's also slightly afraid to show her his feelings. He's quite insecure when it comes to other people's perception of him, and never dares trust his own instincts on the matter.
Other than to his wife, he's very prone to show his emotions. If he's angry, he yells at anyone in his way, if he's sad he cries helplessly, and if he's happy he's just pleasant to be around. One very obvious sign of him being happy is that he plays with words, twisting them in odd ways.
To keep himself from being too down and obsessed with the bad things of his life, he tries to keep himself as busy as possible. He hunts, he rides, he reads, writes, socialises, anything that keeps him occupied.
His biggest grief, the one that is even bigger than the hatred he feels to his life, is that he's sterile. He feels that the only thing that could make him happier is children. However, after trying everything in his power and consulting healers and everything, it is concluded that he is sterile. He keeps this secret from anyone who doesn't need to know it, and is contemplating to let his wife get pregnant with another man, just to secure his own reputation and the fief.
-Personality Flaw: Laurence is infinitely unhappy with the position of life that he's been given, and is very envious of those who have what he'd like to have instead.
Appearance
As most other things in himself, Laurence dislikes his appearance. He's short and chubby, not at all the masculine shape he'd like to have. His complexion is fair, and his light skin gets sunburnt easily. The only aspect of his looks that Laurence are really happy with are his eyes; they are a light grey and nicely shaped, almost like almonds. However, they're obscured by too bushy eyebrows, and attention is drawn from that part of the face to his mouth, with its upper lip that is split from the base of the nose all the way down.
-Appearance Flaw: His split lip. He was born with it, and has tried to get it mended by magic, but nothing has worked to take it away. It isn't much in the way for him, but it does cause him some pain occasionally.
History
Laurence was born at Rosemark, his father's fief. The family lived pretty isolated there, with only the occasional guest from the rest of the world. Already back then, Laurence longed for something else; exactly what is something he's never been able to absolutely determine.
The two sons were raised very close to each other, but kept away from their sister. A maid was hired to teach her how to be a good noble lady, and the boys weren't allowed to see her too much. Therefore they weren't very close as children.
When his brother Jared moved to Corus to start his training as a page, Laurence's envy was enormous. He took the first opportunity he could to move into Corus himself, which was when he was sixteen. He studied History and Foreign Languages, and socialised with all the important people.
About six months before his Ordeal, Jared died. Laurence was made the heir of the fief, which didn't please him as much as people around him thought it would. He missed his brother very much, and his being the new heir constantly reminded him of his brother. The death of one of his siblings brought him closer to his sister, when they started to correspond by letters. At first they were very unfamiliar, but as years went on they grew to know and love each other, despite the rareness of meetings in person.
During his twenty-fifth year, a spectacular wedding between Evelyn and a Tyran noble was organised, and his beloved sister moved far, far away. They kept writing letters, but of course the distance made the correspondence much slower than they were used to, and the frequency and eagerness with which they had up until then written slowly faded away, until only occasional letters reached the one or the other.
At the age of twenty-six, when all the fuss about his sister Evelyn's wedding had calmed down, Laurence was advised to marry too. A fitting woman was selected, and he married her more for the sake of obeying than because he wanted to marry. However, his marriage proved to be a happy success. He is ever-thankful for being matched with her.
Only two years ago, at the age of thirty-two, it was confirmed that Laurence is sterile. He has worked a lot with his feelings about this, but is nowhere near accepting it yet. He is contemplating to use another man to keep the family in order, but he doesn't yet dare to tell his wife about it.
Family
Father: Garreth, 67, deceased. Was a very loving father, but quite disappointed with his son's obvious dislike of his role in life.
Mother: Rosaleen, 68.
Siblings: Evelyn, 32. Jared, 37, deceased.
Wife: Tracy, 28. Was found the most practical woman he could marry, and so he did. They don't have a lot in common, but they manage to maintain a certain level of love-like communication, both on the outside and among themselves.
Okay, I think this is it for now. Please tell me if I've done something wrong - experience tells me that there always is something. Also, grammar errors are welcome! English is my second language and I'm always trying to develop it, and hints about my faults are always helpful.
Yeah. Come crit!
