Character
[/u][/center]Name: Serafin of Eldorne
Gender: Male
Age: 28
City: Corus
Status: Courtier
Personality
Serafin is infuriating, mainly. He tries his best to remain that way, too. He's overbearing and hopelessly noble most of the time, because he knows just how much it bothers everyone. It's not that he's a "bad" person, it's more that he's well aware what a bother it is to be nice to people. His better nature can, occasionally, make a stand, but only if it's really necessary, in which case his full set of ideals will show their ugly faces and make him stand up for the underdog and all sorts of things that never fail to get him into heaps and heaps of trouble.
That's how he'd like to be described, anyway.
Serafin is most likely a big softy, buried under layers of cynicism. He's protecting himself from being hurt, because that sort of thing happens far too easily. But he never, ever, ever lets that show.
Being an avid reader, he will often burst into quotations of something, with a certain amount of lazy ability that he just knows everyone hates.
-Personality Flaw:
An alarming ability to deceive both himself and others. He won't admit to anyone, least of all himself, that he is soft. He can deceive people with a great ability. He tries to keep it in check, knowing that sort of thing is dangerous, but he can't help himself sometimes. Also, he has a habit of inadvertently being insulting.
Appearance
Serafin is of average height, black hair, and deep brown eyes. His skin is a dark tone inherited from somewhere, intensified by hours of sitting in gardens, reading, although he has had to deal with the occasional headache coming from the glare of the sun. Serafin isn't what you'd call gorgeous, but he's not horribly deformed, either. He isn't fat, though he doesn't exercise much, in fact, he's rather thin, but not in a bad way. His face is rather angular, and his hands a bit large, but he has a strong, sturdy build, and no complaints thusfar.
His eyes are probably his best feature, with their velvet-like quality and a constant spark of joy during any match of verbal sparring, but he doesn't pay attention to appearance much. It's led to much agonizing in his family.
-Appearance Flaw:
His nose is sharp, so sharp it creates a small dent between his eyebrows that's rather visible when you see him in profile. He usually has some sort of scrape from numerous escapades, whether the kind his 'better nature' insisted on, or the kind his attitude provoked.
His (as mentioned) large hands have a tendency to chap in winter, and his skin is, in general, a bit dry. He doesn't mind overly, but he supposes he should.
History
Serafin is the second oldest in an old family of high standing, but his older brother is much older than him, because they have different mothers, as Serafin's father was married twice: first to his older brother Nathanael's mother, who died during the birth, second to Serafin's own mother.
Serafin and Nathanael get along quite well, not splendidly, and, while Serafin is bothered by Nathanael's incessant goodwill, Nathanael hates Serafin's sharp tongue and sarcastic comments.
His father Horatio died early in Serafin's life, when he was only ten (Serafin's subconscious tries to tell him this is why he tries to keep himself from being hurt again). Horatio had planned on sending him off for Knight's training, like Nathanael, but shortly after the funeral, his mother approached him and explained the state of affairs: not good. There wasn't much money in the estates, and it was sheer noble pride that had made the late Horatio, want to make him to a knight.
Serafin continued his own education as an intellectual through intensive study in the family library, and by the time he was eighteen, enough money had been regained that he could spend some time at the University. He had, of course, profited from the usual noble lessons arranged within the fief: history, some fencing, languages and so forth.
His mother had born a daughter about five months after Horatio's death, and young Susannah became Serafin's favorite person. She's probably spoiled rotten by him, but he enjoys it.
By the time he reached Corus, Serafin had read most of the classic literature any student needs to read, but had little experience in any fighting beyond fencing. He could usually make do in a sticky situation with talking his way out, but generally he would have to admit defeat. He did learn some archery from other nobles, and occasionally spied on the pages and squires, and has since picked up a few handy tricks, but none of it particularly useful in the real world.
His mother, Eleanora, would like very much to find a good marriage for him, soon, now that Nathanael is settled. Serafin isn't too sure how this makes him feel because while he would like to run an estate and have a firm place in life, he feels dubious about actual marriage. He has had some experience with women, true, but love and marriage was always something for later. Thusfar, he has escaped and is still just one more useless courtier.
