Character
Name: Buckley of Queenscove
Gender: Male
Age: 28
City: Port Caynn
Status: Heir of Queenscove
Personality
Buckley is definitely a felt presence in any room that he enters, not because of being in possession of an outlandish personality but more that he brings with him a certain air of quiet dignity and likeability that infects the people he is with.
You'll never finding him holding court with masses of people around him, more that he will take up ernest conversation with individuals and small groups and make them feel as if they are in the company of someone who listens to them with an honest and willing ear. Because of this, he seems to make friends easily and there are few people who find a bad word to say about him once they've become aquainted with him.
His personality is not overbearing and his tendancy towards quiet observation of large groups of people can make him seem standoffish until he choses his moment to join in and then people realise that he has a lot of interesting opinions and it is quite clear that he is neither stern nor serious.
His mostly affable nature and the polite interest that he shows almost everyone who crosses his path means that he is both well liked and well respected.
People privy to his close aquaintance are aware that Buckley possesses a fast, dry wit which not everyone recongnises and he slips in eminantly quoteable jokes, comments and backhanded compliments often right under the noses of the people he's making light of. His wit is often mistaken for serious comment by those who don't know him well. He picks his moments though and would never purposefully make light of someone who didn't deserve it and he is certainly not spiteful or a bully.
He is a stickler for good etiquette and believes in a certain level of maintaining the status quo and preserving Tortall's traditions. His political views could be described as the more liberal end of conservative. He believes in justice and fair treatment for all; a certain level of living standards and education for the lower classes and good treatment of servants and workers. However, he also believes in the strengths of the class system, the noble right to rule and the traditional roles of the different classes. He believes that nobles should be engaged in noble occupations and he's not keen on the idea of intermarriage between classes. He's a very proud Tortallan.
Buckley's close friends and family are able to experience Buckley without the polite barrier of etiquette and he is more open in his talk and his emotions with them. His wife will attest to the fact that he is an ardent romantic at heart but more in that he believes in the strength and importance of love than being all hearts and flowers and weeping over gooey poetry and ballads.
Buckley laughs a lot and with his trusted circle proves to be somewhat quirky at times, suprising people with moments of uncharacteristic exhuberance when he's most relaxed.
-Personality Flaw:
His pride in his own country can border on overly nationalistic at times. He is sometimes indecisive and needs to seek out and obsessively question people on their opinions before he will act. Whilst sometimes this caution is wise, it can make him a little ineffectual at times.
Appearance:
Buckley stands at a slightly over-average height of 5ft 11in. He never spent his time trying to hulk up, rather just to keep his body lean and trim. He has a decent amount of muscle coating his thin form, and likes to keep it that way. He has long arms and large hands, soft and sturdy rather than the calloused hands of a worker. His had sloping shoulders and a broad upper back that narrows slightly as it goes down. He has regular sized feet for a man of his height and is of average weight.
Deep brown eyes are set under the thick, full eyebrows of a man and are shaded by black lashes. His nose is thin at the top, and broadens out as it reaches farther down his face. He has rosy, normal sized lips that sit above a cleft chin. His cheekbones are unpronounced and his jaw line is soft rather than sharp or square. Dark hued hair falls just below his ears and come down slightly past his ears in characteristic sideburns. His complexion is peachy and slightly tanned from some time out in the sun.
Appearance Flaw:
Buckley tends to have a scruffy, grungy look about him when he does not take care of his appearance, as in combing his hair and shaving regularly. (There are a few others listed in the appearance)
History:
Dale was the second son a respectable family, and Kaelyn was the eldest daughter and child of the Queenscove family. They married for more practical reasons that for love; Dale received his own land and title while Kaelyn was able to keep some residual claim to her homeland. They remained rather distant from one another their first two years, mostly going their own ways and managing their own projects. They began to grow closer during their third year of marriage, and that fondness they shared became genuine love with the birth of their first child.
Kaelyn gave birth to her first son at Queenscove three years after she and Dale had been married. The duke and duchess of Queenscove were thrilled that their firstborn was a male. They loved him to no end, often doting and fawning over him, but were careful not to spoil him. He was a quiet and respectable child, just like his parents. From the day he was born, he was taught proper manners and good morals, having great examples from his mother, father, and his Uncle Hector, who was an advisor to the late King Artagan. His mother, a descendant of Neal of Queenscove, had the healing Gift, which Buckley also inherited.
As soon as he was old enough, he was taught how to read, write, ride a horse, how to hunt, and the very basics in fighting. In this time, his mother gave birth to his brother, Geoffrey, and sister, Jacqueline, who were not paid nearly as much attention to as Buckley had been. For this reason they stuck together and resented their elder brother, and were much closer to each other than to Buckley or their parents.
When he was ten years old, Buckley was sent to the palace to begin his knight training. He did fairly well throughout his page years, thriving in the academic and courtly part of his studies. The physical part of his training was much more of a hobby to him than a lifestyle, and he was never one of the best in his classes. When he was fourteen, he passed the test and became a squire. He was taken in by Sir X a few months after, and Sir X helped him improve in his fighting skills. The years passed quickly, and soon his eighteenth birthday arrived. It came, and went, and later that year he passed his Ordeal, but was very shaken up about it for many weeks afterwards. Just a few days after his ordeal, he was dubbed a knight of Tortall.
During his page and squire years, there had been a small class taken by those who had the Gift. Buckley had attended it, but his knowledge of the Gift had grown little. He yearned to learn more about it and develop a better use for it. His services as a knight weren’t exactly needed at the present time, and so he applied to be a student at the University. He was accepted, and moved to the school to begin his studies.
Since he had the healing gift, he studied anatomy, biology, medicine, and, of course, took a class on developing his gift more and how to use it to actually heal. He also took courses about alchemy, arithmetic, chemistry, and history. Even though his studies were difficult and challenging, he loved them and strived to be the best he could be. He graduated four years later in the top ten percent of his class, very satisfied with the work he had accomplished.
Having finished his time at the university, he moved back to court and returned to his knightly duties. One fateful night at a court ball, he dared to ask Princess Sarafina to dance with him. He was instantly infatuated with her charm, wit, and beauty. They spent a respectable amount of time with each other that night, but it was proper for her to dance and converse with other men at the ball as well. He tried to see her several more times afterwards, but she, however, did not seem to reciprocate his instant love and was more interested in her studies than in a social life. He was not put down by this, but thought of it more as a challenge to win her over.
He constantly badgered her about coming out of her studies and the libraries for a while until she finally gave in and started spending time with him. Buckley re-introduced her to the social world, wooing her in his own unique way: by debating with her. They would always find themselves in heated discussions about the most useless and most important matters, Buckley almost always finding a way to sway her towards his point of view, whether it was verbally or by small tokens of affection. They spent much of their spare time together, and became very close. Buckley often told Sara that he loved her, but she was stubborn and refused to admit it to Buckley and herself, but after careful persuasion and just time, she finally did. Buckley was positively ecstatic when she answered yes to his proposal, but they waited until she graduated from the university to get married. Shortly after they moved to Port Caynn to help govern the busy city.
