Character
[/u][/center]Name:Cuauhtemoc, officially called Cuauhtemoc Christopher Scott by Tortallans. Usually goes simply by Tem.
Gender: Male
Age: 22
City: Port Caynn
Status: Commoner
Personality
First and foremost in his heart, Tem is an explorer. He is fascinated by anything different or strange, he is constantly curious and willing to try anything, at least once. His curiosity makes him very open, he likes to meet new people and get into new situations. However, his eagerness to meet people doesn’t mean that he is necessarily always friendly. He purposely tries to agitate people just to see how they react and to keep things interesting, he has made many an enemy this way, but luckily some people realize that he doesn’t really mean anything by it and will excuse his somewhat unruly behavior.
He is a very energetic person, preferring running to writing and standing to sitting, which makes him very hard for manners and society to tame. He’s like a cat in that when he wants to play he will play and when he wants to sleep he will sleep, this lax attitude has caused his uncle endless grief when it comes to scheduling activities for Tem.
Tem is very flexible, he likes to think of the future as a vague series of sometime-I-should-do-thats, but anything concrete makes him uncomfortable. This is very good for situations where flexibility is needed, he would never begrudge someone for running late or changing plans at the last minute.
He has a strong sense of humor, he can always find something funny about any situation. Tem finds it easier to deal with heavy subjects with a bit of humor, which some may deem as inappropriate. He usually gets a few chuckles out of misery, it helps to protect his more fragile emotions.
-Personality Flaw: Tem is sensitive to others, more than he would like to let on. He hates criticism and can be easily hurt by the words of others when he knows that they are being serious.
Appearance
Tem is slightly shorter than the average Tortallan, his nose usually reaches the chin of someone his age. He has a thin, ropey body, which is best suited to running and jumping, as opposed to heavy lifting. He has completely despaired of ever being tall and muscular, but he really has never cared that much about his stature. His uncle, however, has devised endless schemes to get him that extra inch (shoes with thick soles) and to bulk him up a bit (heavy jackets in any season). His hair has also caused his uncle grief, but never phased Tem. It is dark brown and wiry, it has proved to be untamable, especially in the slightest bit of wind or rain. He wears it a bit longer than is strictly fashionable, mostly out of laziness.
Tem’s face is long and rectangular, his nose and his lips are wide and his eyes are a light brown color. His skin is a golden brown, not quite as dark as his mother’s people, but clearly not white.
-Appearance Flaw: Besides Tem’s height and somewhat awkward build, his flaws include one ear that is higher than the other and a wrist to elbow scar that resulted from an embarrassing tumble down a cliff when he was ten (it had seemed like a good idea when he started climbing, but not so good in hindsight).
History
Christopher Ronald Scott was a wealthy commoner, who had made a fortune with his older brother, Vargos James Scott, trading spices, cloth, and other fine goods. They owned a small fleet of ships and had recently discovered that there was some noble blood connection, which could be exaggerated into a higher status for themselves. They were doing so well that Christopher slowly became more and more bored and restless, until he finally came up with a hair-brained scheme to begin trade with the Western reaches of the world. Vargos, always the more conservative of the two, disapproved but was eventually won over by Christopher’s persistent arguing.
Christopher took a ship and sailed to the West, where he discovered an exciting new world, which was everything that his meandering heart desired. He tried to get a few items into the trade route, but it was halfhearted, he spent most of his time exploring and observing the strange customs of the native people. After nearly a decade of living with the Uuoad people, he was beginning to really understand their language and customs. He married a Uuoad woman, named Ixchell, and was expecting their first child. However, shortly after the child’s birth a plague was introduced to the village that swiftly and effectively wiped out most of the population. Weakened by a strenuous pregnancy, Ixchell was among the first to die from the disease. Heartbroken, Christopher tried to continue on in the village. He traveled and lived for six years without Ixchell, but he never fully recovered emotionally from her death. Finally, he decided to return to Tortall with his son, named Cuauhtemoc. By this time Christopher had grown old and he had forgotten the perils and trials of sea, he grew very ill early in the trip. He did not last long after that, he never even got to see the shores of Tortall before passing away.
Cuauhtemoc arrived in Tortall alone, knowing only a few scattered words in Common and having no Tortallan currency. Vargos appeared at the dock to welcome home his brother and nephew, but found only his six-year-old nephew. He brought Cuauhtemoc home with him, he had never been married and the boy brought a little light to the old bachelor’s life. Vargos had always been interested in Uuoad culture and had researched their lifestyles in a scholarly atmosphere, but never this close and personal. He strongly disapproved of the common idea that Uuoads are “lesser” than Easterners and set about to prove that Cuauhtemoc could be as civilized as any other Tortallan.
He had probably selected the wrong candidate for showing civilized behavior, because Tem was always a loose canon when he was growing up. Tem was mischievous and unruly, he played rough with the other boys and never backed down from a fight. As a child he was as rough and wild as possible, and Vargos found more and more that he cared for the boy beyond any scholarly pursuits. He has since committed much time and energy to finding a suitable and stable future for his nephew.
Tem, though, has found it hard to focus on anything, despite his uncle’s best efforts. He would rather carouse around Port Caynn with friends. When he first arrived in Port Caynn, making friends had been very difficult because of his wild and mysterious childhood in the Western Reaches. He found himself in many scrapes due to his Uuoad heritage, but eventually he pieced together a group of friends, though they still tease him about being Uuoad, it is all in good fun. Now he is rather confident and comfortable with his friends and would much rather spend time with them than at the newest party or event that his uncle is always pressing him into attending.
