Alias: Ruth/Nana
Gender: F

Character
Name: Tobias Scylding
Gender: M
Age: 29
City: Port Caynn (born in Mirrahelm in Scanra)
Status: Pirate
Personality: When they came up with the phrase 'it's always the quiet ones...' someone had Tobias in mind. He is not prone to loose chatter and small talk and when Tobias speaks he gives the sense that anything he has to say has been given deep and serious thought. However, he is not entirely humourless and can share a joke when the mood takes him.
He is level headed in a fight and his good sense of tactical stratagems matched with an air of intelligence and suppressed fierceness means that he tends to inspire a sense of loyalty and obedience in those he crews with.
He is intelligent and although his book learning is pretty limited, he can read well enough and speak several languages including his native Scanran, Common, Gallan and plenty of choice expletives in other languages. He observes and listens and this helps him make sound judgements on people quickly.
He is obedient towards his Captain and trusts Raven's judgement and skills and values her belief in him as First Mate, however he is equally of the mind that should he ever be given any reason to doubt her, he would happily depose her in a second.
Tobias tends towards sobriety rather than drunkenness, disliking those who are incapacitated by alcohol and unable to do their jobs properly. He is a pirate body and soul and enjoys the lawlessness of what he does and sees any ships on the sea as fair game. He holds no sway with the unspoken codes of conduct for taking prisoners and ships and bargaining for ransoms and sees any means that brings about the right ends as appropriate.
In his personal relationships, Tobias is an avowed bachelor. Whilst he enjoys the company of women from time to time he sees them as a distraction and believes that love only blinds people and in his line of work that means winding up dead. He's lived through many a good pirate getting themselves hung for the sake of getting caught up with a lover. He has no relationship with his living family and cares little what has become of them.
Tobias has an inner artist and plays the fife exceptionally well. He has a natural ear for music and notation and can pick up tunes by ear. He sometimes entertains the crew by playing shanties, hornpipes and popular folk tunes. In another life he would probably have been a musician of considerable talent but his birth and status means he's never had exposure to that world of concerts and conservatories. He finds an escape in playing music and it is a decidedly peaceful foil to his hard lifestyle.
Personality Flaw:
His quiet demeanour belies a brutal streak. Tobias has a strong survival instinct and sense of self preservation and his willingness to do whatever is necessary to ensure his wellbeing means that he will happily sell people who think they are his friends down the river if it means that he will land on his feet. Conversely this means he trusts next to no one and has few close personal friends.
Appearance
Tobias is an intimidating 6ft 3 tall. He is muscled from years spent at hard graft on various ships but he is sturdy rather than completely muscle bound. He keeps himself in shape in part through the heavy work of onboard life and partly through a daily training regime. In this regime he trains with the rapier and with hand to hand combat. Frequently he takes the training of new crew members in hand.
Tobias has the usual Scanran fair skinned complexion, but his crow black hair and dark brown eyes indicate some non Scanran heritage hidden way back in his ancestry.
He favours dark colours, red and black and sometimes paints his face with a red and black across his nose and cheeks and under his eyes when going in to battle to add to his fierce persona.
He favours carrying a rapier rather than a cutlass and had his made especially to his specifications in Port Caynn. He also carries a short bone handled boot knife carved with a skeleton and two flintlock pistols in his belt.
His right ear is pierced twice and he has a tattoo of a dragon on his forearm and Scanran knot work symbols on his shoulder blades.
His skin is marked with various scars and scabs from fights and ship work and his hands are large and heavily calloused.
Appearance Flaw:
A few years ago, Tobias was caught in a cannon blast, splintered metal from the blast lodged in his right shinbone. Although the wound healed the metal is still lodged in his shin, the skin above is quite badly disfigured and the shin frequently gives him pain especially in bad weather. He also has a naturally heavy brow and this can make him look unpleasantly surly.
History
Tobias' early life is fairly simply explained. His family lived in the small town of Mirrahelm and he was born the eldest of 8 children to his mother Dorta and his father Aric. His parents were both labourers and although he got a basic education when he was young from the town's Temple school, when he was big enough to do hard work then he was big enough to leave school.
His education ended aged 10 and he was put to work in the nearby mines. He slept in the workers huts to take the pressure off his family and to give room to his ever burgeoning siblings at least there he was fed and dry.
He felt, quite simply that his family neither loved him nor needed him, his father worked constantly to feed the hungry mouths and his mother was too caught up in nursing the little ones to pay him much mind and attention. Tobias barely knew the names of his newest and youngest siblings, all he really knew by age 14 were that there were three boys including him and five girls and that the eldest three were Erik, Tomas and Aude.
At 14 he moved on, growing tired with the daily darkness of the mines. He never even said goodbye to his family, thinking that they wouldn't miss him anyway. He made his way as an itinerant labourer until he reached the coastal port of Helsvard. There, somewhat naively, he signed up to join the crew of a merchant ship, The Maiden. He worked his way up from cabin boy to being an able seaman. He loved life at sea but found the merchant runs a drudge, especially as his hard work only lined the pockets of already fat merchants.
Aged 16 and on a trip from Helsvard to Tyra his ship was attacked by pirates. Tobias spotted a chance for survival and gave himself up, offering himself as crew and the Captain of the Maiden as a hostage. He spent 5 years on board The Rake and his ruthless streak and a gift for tactics quickly earned him a way in to the trusted inner circle of the Captain, Edwin Roberts. Tobias enjoyed the gold that now lined his pockets and the more he gained the more ferocious and tenacious he became.
The Rake was eventually seized in port due to the carelessness of the Captain and crew in a drunken stupor. Tobias was on a supply run at the time and this was when Tobias swore off drunkenness, thankful to avoid the noose.
He has spent the intervening years crewing for various ships, moving on when they become a null prospect or just before disaster struck. He has diligently squirreled away his money with a banker in Port Caynn, hoping to buy his own ship one day.
His reputation is now somewhat infamous. People respect or conversely fear his single mindedness, his tactical skills, his ferocity in battle and his uncanny knack for self preservation.
He was recruited on the basis of that reputation by Raven Vamir who sought him out to join her crew as First Mate. He was shocked by her age but impressed by her ambition and knew from the tavern talk that she could handle herself as Captain. He agreed to sign up and has sailed with the Eclipse these past two years.
