Alright, so I've caught up on the whole "Shang Debate" that went on in the Introductions thread. The Shang, as Nana pointed out, are more or less a type of "organization" based on a tangent of Yamani culture. In the Board Setting, I wrote:
Therefore, the Shang are allowed but they will have adapted to fit the time period. In my mind's eye, they will have become sort of like the Rogue in that they are a network of individuals, whether they have loyalties to the Palace or not. Like the Rogue, they will have more of a common-place status, rather than the noble one they used to, though I will allow nobles to be educated in the "Shang arts" or whatever they are Tortallanly termed. Their definitive "fighting style" will still hold its Yamani influence, but like I said, it has adapted to "modern" times. I hope this make sense? Feel free to ask questions.
Also, I wanted to clear up that I'm steering away from the canon in that Maren has an Iberian/Baltic/Slavic base instead of the Asiatic base Pierce gave it. I couldn't stand that she had the Yamani Isles way out in the middle of the ocean, a huge chunk of non-Asian cultures in the middle, and then Asian cultures again out east. Too much culture displacement for Roy to handle all at once. xD
