History
Frederick was born to a well-to-do family in the seaside town of Firth. He was the first child of innkeeper James Hastings and his wife Phyllis and was later followed by five siblings: Filly, Alex, Jack, Maggie and Hilah. The six children were relatively close in years, naturally making them all close to one another; of his siblings, Frederick was closest with his sister Filly and brother Jack. Frederick and Alex, meanwhile, for all that they were closer and age and shared the same bedroom, did not develop a close relationship. The two were more likely to quarrel and compete than to get along with one another, whereas Jack idolized Frederick and sought to be very much like him. Maggie and Hilah, although Frederick was tender and doting toward them, were too young to have bonded much with their brother.
Although fairly well off as far as means go, James and Phyllis both strove to drive a hard work ethic into their children, as well as a sense of charity. No child was skimped from doing chores, whether it be to muck the stalls, to gather eggs or to take a basket of foodstuffs to their more unfortunate neighbours. Even for all the work and the standards that they were given, the Hastings children had a remarkable amount of liberty at their disposal. Once the cow was milked, the tavern floor scrubbed and sparkling and the laundry set out to dry, the children for the most part were given leave to roam.
At the age of seven, Frederick was given a piebald nag that he was wont to ride through Firth, down to the wharf and along the seashore. The nag was a large, albeit old, draught horse, so oftentimes Frederick would be seen toting around up to three of his younger siblings with him on top of the animal's back. While his sisters would spend their trips to the shore collecting shells and things, Frederick would gaze out to the great, winged vessels flitting across the waves and dream that someday he would be a heroic captain fighting against pirates.
Around the time the nag died, Frederick was fourteen. Within a week of the nag's death men in uniform came passing through Firth, instantly capturing Frederick's interest. Since these men stayed at the inn and recruited mainly within the tavern, Frederick was given plenty of opportunity to talk with them. To his boyish delight, they were men from the Royal Navy, seeking to enlist any interested young fellow into the Service as midshipmen aboard His Majesty's vessels. Frederick was immediately seized by the desire to enlist, much to his parents' dismay. After two nights' struggle, Frederick won his father's consent––if it had not been for his two younger brothers, James would have hardly saw fit to allow Frederick to go as someone needed to inherit the inn.
The recruiters provided Frederick with the necessary information he needed as soon as he signed on, and within a week the boy set out for Port Caynn, hitching rides on the backs of wagons and carts when he could. After a week and a half of travel, Frederick reached Port Caynn and followed the directions given to him. Arriving at the Fort, he was admitted, inspected, fed and quartered. The next day he was assigned to the crew of the HMS Osprey and was due to set out to sea three days later.
Aboard the Osprey, it was very clear that Frederick was a "landlubber". He was clueless as to what was said, what he should do, where he should go, how something was to be done; but the other sailors on board were good-natured about his greenness and were diligent in making sure that Frederick knew what to do. It would take Frederick his due time to season himself into a sailor, but after the initial shock of his new life at sea, Frederick began to quickly adjust and learn. Luckily for the boy, his first voyage as a midshipman was uneventful aside from a few gales; the vessel's aim that period at sea was to simply map the coastlines of the Eastern lands to ensure that the Navy's maps would remain accurate and up to date.
Ten months later, the Osprey returned to Port Caynn and Frederick at fifteen had been given a taste of a life he hungered for more of. Lingering at the Fort, he signed himself onto a voyage that was due to set out in five months and thereafter departed for a respite at home with his family. Confined to the Inn, Frederick was helplessly restless among his family and instead of committing to his old chores he'd spend most of his days visiting the beach or seeking out other sailors passing through Firth.
During this time, Jim had decided that the Inn would pass instead to Alexander, who worked meticulously and narrowly at his chores. The relationship between Frederick and his brother became strained and bitter, although the inheritance of the inn was not the reason. Alex struggled with the image of Frederick as a sailor, his sour attitude toward his older brother's adventures at see was a very complex jealousy. Alexander himself was not adventurous, moreso even at a young age he was quite provincial, but his ties to the Inn and to the land and the sense that he was eternally bound to them were what made him hate Frederick's freedom.
Frederick's relationship with his youngest brother Jack, however, flourished at this time. He often helped the young boy evade his chores and let him accompany him to the wharf or to the market, or would escape with him to the dunes and tell him about his times at sea. Years later, when Jack was fifteen, he too signed onto a naval vessel with the hopes of seeking a glorious life as a sailor. Three years later while on a voyage to the Yamani Isles, however, Jack was swept overboard in a storm and lost to the sea. While Frederick would then feel acute guilt for his brother's fate, his family was devastated by the loss; Phyllis and Alex were the two individuals who laid the heaviest and harshest blame on Frederick.
Yet at fifteen still, Frederick was filled with the hopes and fantasies of a boy. As soon as the five months' wait had passed, Frederick returned to Port Caynn and soon set foot aboard the HMS Witchdoctor. The Witchdoctor had a long journey ahead of her, one which carried Frederick well across the Emerald Ocean and into parts of the world which he had only ever imagined. When he returned to Port Caynn again, he was very well into his seventeenth year, and very much a seasoned and promising young sailor.
Without hesitation Frederick signed aboard for another vessel, due to set out in eight months' time for the Western Reaches. Although his voyages aboard the HMS Witchdoctor took him far into the wilds of the unknown West, they did not venture northwards toward the Archipelago or the Colonies much at all. Looking forward to his future voyage, Frederick again headed home to spend his time on land with his family with whom he was gradually becoming estranged. Returning home he found Filly married and with child, his father aged and Alex engaged, and Jack more ready than ever to set out for his own life as a sailor. Maggie and Hilah treated Frederick shyly, so many years younger than him, their relationship with his was beginning to become merely fond and distant memory.
Eight months and a wailing niece later, Frederick again gathered up his knapsack and made his way to Port Caynn. Arriving he was surprised by a recommendation by his former captain, elevating him to the rank of 2nd mate of the HMS Chimera. Surprised but determined to prove himself worthy of the rank, Frederick strove to do his new captain's good faith in him justice.
